To build your own wind turbine is by no means a difficult project, but it is one that requires careful preparation on the front end. You have to temporarily park your euphoria over getting the device up and running and make sure you have crossed your t's and dotted your i's.

There are two difficult things that you must get right on the front end if you want to have a successful project:

1. You must make certain upfront what exactly you want to get done. Wind devices will only work if you take the time to be very specific about what it will accomplish. First, you must make sure that you are building a wind turbine that matches your need. To do that, you must assess what your options are. Often, there are multiple things you can do - like for example, power a small pump or, provide back-up battery power for your critical appliances like your refrigerator. Many people also go so far as to power their entire house with wind energy. This is certainly doable but you must live in a state where there are enough resources to get this done. It is easy enough to check out on the Internet the wind maps that the government has, in order to find out if you have enough wind in your state.

2. Then, possibly, the most critical question is how much time you have to invest to build your own wind turbine? The cheapest way by far is to get a set of plans or diagrams and just build the wind turbine yourself from scratch. This can save literally thousands of dollars but you have to be realistic with yourself if you don't really have the time to invest in a scavenger hunt to find all the parts that you need to build one. If you save a lot of money, conceptually, but never actually complete the turbine then you haven't done yourself any favors. If you don't have the time to do this be realistic and get some help. You can go through a dealer and either let them do all or part of the assembly for you.

By being super careful on the front end, your success with a when device is almost assured. There are just these two items of homework that you have got to get right in the first place or, you can waste a lot of time and add frustration to your life instead of the free energy you intended to add.
