This article about the positive things for you to consider if you are looking into the vertical wind turbine for home use. Bottom line is they are better than horizontals in many categories.

This isn't everything but here are 3 really good reasons for concentrating your search on vertical windmills:

1. Perform well on a roof structure - vertical windmills are small as far as their footprint goes and they can be positioned in a relatively tiny space because of that. This I think is the best thing about them - they can be located all over a roof and make as much power as you can afford to buy turbines to supply. As we continue to make them easier and more turnkey, the more people will feel comfortable buying and installing them. I envision a world where a person can buy a vertical wind turbine online and install it themselves with a minimum of hassle and trouble connecting to the electrical system at home or even the electrical grid of their utility.

2. Turbulent winds are no problem for a vertical - they actually perform well in this environment most often found on roofs or down lower beneath the level of trees and buildings. Vertical turbines don't have a tail and don't have to look for and find the most prevalent wind like a horizontal turbine has to. As the speeds at which turbines start making power keeps getting lower and lower, verticals will enjoy increasing popularity.

3. Higher velocity of the wind is ok for a vertical - if the wind gets too strong a horizontal windmill is designed to shut down to protect it from destroying itself. Verticals don't have such a mechanism so they will keep running almost no matter what. With horizontal turbines when they do furl and shut down, you have to go out and physically set them straight again to get them going and making power like they were before.

One big problem though with the vertical wind turbine for home concept is that they are not nearly as efficient as horizontal wind turbines. Horizontals can reach efficiencies as high as 55% but the poor vertical is lucky to reach 35%.

Part of that inefficiency is due to how reactive the vertical is to differing wind directions. So, its strength is also its weakness. The tail part of the horizontal turbine contributes heavily to its relative efficiency.

Summarizing - the vertical wind turbine for home use is a great way to make power but you must be careful to consider both the good and the bad when analyzing which will work best for your application.
