Is it the right thing to do to be thinking about how to make home windmill? I mean, there are a great number of ways to take part in the renewable power world - why go to all the trouble?

Here are 3 reasons that we all should be interested in:

1. Cut costs - if you make your own wind turbine you will have an endless supply of free power. As long as the wind continues to blow, you will have power for your house or appliance if you choose to just back up one device around your house. The only thing you have to pay for along the way is regular maintenance only performed annually and funding part replacements when they wear out.

2. Reduce the amount of carbon you are responsible for putting in the atmosphere - everyone is talking about this topic now. You can either buy these credits or reduce your personal consumption somehow.

3. Reduce your energy dependence - this may be the biggest benefit of all. We all grew up with loads of cheap energy. Now, all that has changed. The countries that brought us all that cheap energy are either warring with us or warring with themselves. The area is very unstable and we can't afford to put all our eggs in that basket anymore. Truthfully, if you can do projects around the house and are reasonably sure of yourself with making things, you will do fine learning how to make a home windmill.

But first, you need to find out if there are any hidden obstacles lurking to derail you. Will your local government entity have anything against it being put up or require a permit of some kind? This is a question best asked on the front end of the project.

Also, what about whether or not you have enough wind on your property to sustain a windmill in the first place? You need to really do your research on this one. It is easy to do but time consuming. You must do your due diligence and post an anemometer at likely locations around your property and measure the wind for a week or two. If you have at least 9 miles per hour, your project will most likely be a home run.

When you get right down to it, there isn't another way for us to go. As the supplies of fossil fuels get to be a smaller and smaller resource, learning how to make a home windmill will be a short-term project that will yield benefits for the rest of your life.
