Vertical Wind Mill For The Home - Perhaps Might Not Meet Your Needs

An ideal way to make some electricity from Mother Nature these days is a vertical wind turbine for the home, but it just might be the exact wrong thing for you and your home. The reason for that is several aspects of the effectiveness of this type of device that you must consider.

While vertical turbines can be a good solution, they have to match your unique circumstances. There is not a one-size-fits-all solution here.

In order to evaluate whether verticals will work for you, it is wise to first assess where you stand in terms of wind resources and legal restrictions - so these are 2 things you need to do before plunging ahead:

1. Understand how fast and in what direction your normal wind blows in

2. Ask your city and county first if there are any permitting issues you need to consider before going any further

Now that you have done that and understand your local environment, these are the factors that may make the vertical turbine a non-starter for you:

1. If you have a need to make a huge amount of power - that is, if you are trying to power your whole house, a vertical might not work. The reason I say that is vertical windmills just aren't that efficient at producing electricity. Horizontal windmills can have efficiencies over 50%, while vertical turbines hover in the mid-30s.

2. If your wind is strongest from one particular direction a vertical turbine will produce a lot less energy than a horizontal - this is because the strength of the vertical is in its ability to change direction.

3. Or, if your strongest wind is up high - horizontal wind turbines can produce a tremendous amount of power in these situations. Mounted high on a tower, horizontals are your best bet if you are trying to harvest a huge amount of power at altitude.

Summarizing - although vertical wind turbines are all the rage now they still might not be a fit for you. You have to carefully assess your local environment and determine if verticals or horizontals will work better for you. Also, consider that there are probably other renewable options for you, like solar. Often if wind is weak, solar is a great solution.

As vertical wind turbines continue to decrease in their cut-in speed, or the speed they start making power, they will become a solution for more and more people.
