There are a number of aspects of a wind turbine project you need to look into carefully if you are going to build your own at home. The main thing you need to decide first is WHY am I doing this? Why do I want to go to all this trouble?

With the decline in fossil fuel resources available now, there are huge number of new wind technologies available in kit form and ready to use right out of the box.

There are many important issues to think through when you look at windmills for your home.

With all the popularity of the topic of renewable energy nowadays, there are just a lot of options popping up new seems like every day.

However, plans for basic wind turbines are relatively inexpensive -costing in some cases less than $10. Of course, that means there is a lot of work for you to do, but the savings by doing it yourself is enormous.

One thing you must do before spending any money is honestly self-evaluate and see if you are the type of person who will follow through and actually complete the turbine. You can do that once you buy an inexpensive set of plans - just make sure you fully understand the work involved and the time it will take before you buy any materials.

Here are the 3 basic categories of individuals who are likely to be motivated enough to build a wind turbine themselves:

People who do projects around the house on a regular basis anyway. Those are the people who are staining their deck when everyone else is watching television on Saturday afternoon!Inquisitive individuals who want to learn the science behind how these things work.Green people. Those are those among us who want to take a stand on the carbon reduction aspect of adding a windmill to their house. There is no doubt you have to have been born with a good measure of patience to complete any project that is totally new to you. You have to be willing to live with some frustrations if you build your own wind turbine.

Here is an idea though that may offer a happy medium for those who want to take on such a project but don't have a metal or wood working shop out back of the house - buy the blades themselves and don't try to make those.

Blades wear out the fastest of any part in the system anyway so that is a good item to leave to professionals. There are a number of poly and metal blades that will last a long time available for most any windmill out there.

If you are serious about cutting your power costs at home, build your own wind turbine and watch your electricity bill shrink. Just make sure you design the workload to fit your schedule and be determined to stick it out and finish once you start.
