With wind terminal prices there is really quite a huge gap between horizontal axis wind turbine devices, or, HAWTs and vertical axis devices, or VAWTs. That means that they are made to look a lot more like their environment. They almost seem camouflaged in some cases.
Due to its distinct design advantages, the horizontal axis home wind turbine is the strongest option for someone looking to make the most power at home. The question of whether it is cheaper has more to do with a proper life cycle analysis than what the unit costs initially. Many devices are cheap on the front end of the project but then cost a fortune to get installed and to maintain. Thus, ultimately the cheapest thing to buy initially is not always the cheapest thing in the long run.
To really understand life cycle costing you need to take a thorough look at all the cost associated with the product over its life. In the case of analyzing home wind turbines those items will include the upfront cost, the installation costs and commissioning, as well as the replacement and maintenance costs over all the years you are likely to own it.
In summary, wind turbine prices are all over the board but horizontal axis wind turbines are usually a lot cheaper than vertical axis wind turbines.
