The question of whether it is cheaper has more to do with a proper life cycle analysis than what the unit costs initially. Many devices are cheap on the front end of the project but then cost a fortune to get installed and to maintain. Thus, ultimately the cheapest thing to buy initially is not always the cheapest thing in the long run.
To really understand life cycle costing you need to take a thorough look at all the cost associated with the product over its life. In the case of analyzing home wind turbines those items will include the upfront cost, the installation costs and commissioning, as well as the replacement and maintenance costs over all the years you are likely to own it.
