What exactly is a Windtura 750 Home Wind Turbine Kit?

The Windtura 750 is a wind turbine kit that produces approximately 800 Watts in a 29 mph wind. If you buy the kit you still have to buy a generator and an inverter. It is a true diy unit so it is up to you to piece together the other component parts, such as the generator and the inverter that converts the dc power into energy that can be stored in a battery or used to power your house.

Keep in mind that this is not a lot of power but it is a good start. Your dreams of going off-grid will have to wait until you have more of these units in series in order to power your entire house.

The Windtura 750 kit system is a classic horizontal axis wind turbine. That means it looks sort of like a Dutch windmill that we are all familiar with - 3 blades turning perpendicular to the ground.

How much does the kit cost?

The kits themselves cost under $1,000 but you also need to buy some components. That is pretty darned inexpensive but as they say, we get what we pay for. The company is straightforward about what they are selling - basically, just a windmill. It is up to you how you want to generate power with this thing.

There are a number of cost elements if you want to do this right:

Purchase of the kit itself

Purchase of the generator and the inverter from Windtura or from others

Installation on your roof or installation of the tower on a foundation

Connection to your home or battery storage unit

I strongly recommend taking action while the federal tax credit is in place. There is now a 30% Wind Tax Credit. And, that's on all the costs you have associated with getting your wind turbine up and running…very cool incentive to take action before it goes away.

Are Windtura kits difficult the kit to put together and install?

The kit concept as applied her is fairly modular - meaning, there are only a few parts to put together. However, you still have to have some mechanical aptitude to do that. Kits in general range from the extremely simple to the complex. Simple kits will be like the Windtura, where blades need to be bolted together and then bolted to a hub assembly. More complex kits may even require fashioning the blades themselves out of material that is supplied in the kit or, bought at a hardware store.

While this may sound like a potentially large pain to put one of these together, the reward for putting a wind turbine kit together is massive. The feeling of taking charge of your energy future by making at least some of your energy requirement from a perpetual source is almost ennobling.

What are the pitfalls in this exercise?

Bottom line - The mistake most people make is assuming, since this thing is a kit, they can really figure out how to do the whole thing on their own. It is one thing to be able to put the kit together according to the instructions, but it is quite another to mount the assembled wind turbine on a tower and then erect the tower. Even more challenging is tying the electrical part in with your house. Unless you have experience with electrical installation, it is downright dangerous to try this part yourself.

Doing the final installation and tie-in can be dangerous and unless you are planning on starting a business installing and tying-in wind turbines, there is very little upside to handling this part of it yourself. Instead, leave mounting and electrical tie-in to pros. That way too, you have someone to blame if it's not done right.

What distinguishes Windtura from its competitors?

The Windtura 750 wind turbines are not that aesthetically pleasing in my opinion. They do however get the job done. In their case, you aren't asking them to win a beauty contest - "just churn me out some major power from available wind".

Also, these units are simple. Only the absolutely necessary moving parts, so not much to go wrong and when something does, these units are not expensive to repair.

Can my county ordinance keep me from installing a windmill on my own property?

Local ordinance and neighborhood covenants can throw cold water on your plans to install a wind turbine at your house. That is changing somewhat, with the government's insisting that renewable energy become mainstream to take some of the load off fossil fuel production.

Many neighborhood covenants simply won't allow wind turbines, so as not to spoil the look and value of the property - so, you had better check before you get too serious about buying one.

If all the stars line up and you can in fact buy and install one without getting in trouble with your neighbors, the Windtura 750 home wind turbine kit though is a very reliable product and you will not go wrong choosing it…
