With a residential wind turbine, you do not necessarily have to have a battery. However, that can be a great idea depending on what your application is.

With the ever decreasing supplies of fossil fuels to make power from, we are all wrestling with this concept. How do we integrate renewable energy sources into our lives and start making our electricity at home? The residential wind turbine is one answer to that question and there are a variety of different ways that we can go about utilizing the electricity that we make with this device.

The intermittent nature of renewable resources, such as wind and sun, is holding this industry back tremendously. Of course having a battery pack will make a big difference because you can store that energy and use it later, but the problem is when you add a battery pack you are more than doubling the cost of the project.

This increase in cost can wreck the best laid plans. With a residential wind turbine project you need to see a relatively quick payback to give you the focus to push ahead and do more.

There are several ways that you can take advantage of electricity that you harvest from the wind…

First off, most people just pick out a small appliance to power. What I mean by that is you can select something like a freezer or a swimming pool pump is your first project. Once you have selected the device that you're going to supply power for, then your task is to figure out the intermittent or constant nature of the demand. For example if you are thinking about running your whole house with the wind turbine, then you're going to need either an extremely steady wind over a long period time with a very high average speed or a huge bank of batteries to supply the electricity when the wind is not blowing.

Secondly, you can power your entire house with a home wind turbine. This of course will have to be a rather large device and you'll have to have a large associated battery pack to complement it.

If you can afford a battery pack with your project is always best to charge the batteries and then let the batteries deplete and supply electricity for the device that you have intended to hook it up to.

In summary, batteries are very nice additions to a residential wind turbine project. While they do add a tremendous amount of cost, they can be the difference between a mediocre and a tremendous payback for you.
