Looking into my crystal ball, I see residential wind systems being a large part of renewable energy scene in America within the next 20 years. There are government mandates out there that are calling for more and more renewable energy solutions as well. The governments of many nations are insisting that utilities implement these projects.
That, combined with the emerging acceptance of the green movement worldwide, is making residential land an important mainstream component of the energy landscape. There probably is no retreating from the position they are taking. Until we run out of fossil fuels to power central plants, there will be no universal move forward, but along the way people, will gradually start taking responsibility for personal energy production within the scope of what they can do with a home project.
Within the scope of residential wind systems projects, there are two that are most critical to the success of this genre as a whole:
First, is the horizontal axis wind turbine - this renewable energy system is by far the most popular because it is the simplest. The number of units that have been sold have driven the price down and these can literally be purchased for under $600 in some cases. Now, that is before you install the device, but, even so, we're talking less than $1000 for a home built energy machine.
Next, is the vertical axis wind turbine - this residential wind device is best suited for roofs. That makes it very popular for people living in large cities. Sometimes the only real estate available for installing a turbine is on our roofs and in that case, you need to use a vertical wind turbine. They are very small and compact and have short moment arms so as not to destroy the underlying substructure of the roof. There is no one right wind turbine for everybody. The success of your particular project will depend on how well you've analyzed the wind resources that you have and the type of wind device that will best suit those. This analysis is going to be up to you and the more time you take with it, the better your long-term results will be.
Summarizing - the two main types of residential wind turbines you should consider are horizontal axis vertical axis. There is no great cost advantage between the two, but the horizontal version is a lot more efficient and will produce more energy for you if you can locate it in an area where the winds are strong.
