If you really want to know how to make a simple windmill, you can get that done very inexpensively and actually make some power.

If you need any motivation, we don't need to look very far to find it. The fossil fuel supplies we have come to depend on are finite and it is clear those in government are more interested in reelection than in being proactive in seriously moving us to a post fossil fuel economy.

Whether it happens in our lifetimes or in our children's it doesn't really matter all that much - we know we are running out because the supplies are limited. We have to take some action and renewable energy sources that NEVER give out are a great solution for the home. Taking action by learning how to make a simple windmill is a very positive step forward that doesn't cost that much money and doesn't require technical expertise.

Besides, you can have some fun and cut your power bill almost immediately. Making the power generation system on your own is not all that hard if you are reasonably handy with home projects already.

Below are the 3 steps to take:

Determine what you want to do with the power you make
Determine how much wind energy you have available and if there are any local restrictions to hamper your efforts
Look on the internet for plans and instructions - Earth4Energy is one that is very popular but there are many others

First, you must decide why you are making the wind turbine. There a number of things you can do with the power - charge a battery bank, supply power for a pump or, export electricity to your local utility.

Secondly, assess the wind resources on your property. Do you have 9 mph average wind speed or less? If you do some testing with an anemometer and you find you have less, then a simple wind turbine may still be a go, but your power generation expectations need to be ratcheted down accordingly.

Lastly, the easiest part is making the turbine itself. There are many sets of plans available on the internet for less than $75. Earth4Energy is a popular one because it includes video instruction but there are many out there that will provide you with the knowledge you need.

The parts can be found and ordered online or at many hardware stores as well.

When you are finished, you could have a perpetual energy generation system that isn't really all that expensive if you are willing to invest some sweat equity. Learning how to make a simple windmill can be a terrific home project for your whole family. And, a great value lesson for your kids in how to do things for themselves.
