With residential wind turbines there are a lot of options these days. It very much depends though on where you want to install the device as to which kind is best for you.

If there were a source of fuel that could easily replace the current sources, we would not need to go to all the trouble to set up home energy generation. Home wind turbines are just a way of stemming the tide or rising costs.
In summary, there is no best alternative what comes to residential wind turbines. You just have to size the particular alternative to the situation at hand and make the most out of the wind that is available in the best spot on your property.
