If you are in the market or are looking into the possibility of purchasing a home wind turbine, then you no doubt have seen the ratings or the kilowatt ratings on these devices and possibly puzzled over what they mean. These wind devices will be categorized according to have many kilowatts of energy they will deliver.
But, they can be very misleading. It is easy to do the math and get mistaken about how much energy a home wind turbine will actually make. For example, if you buy a 1 kW wind device, of course you think that it will give you 1 kW of power. However, that is true only in very rare instances.
The kilowatt rating for home wind turbine is a very marketing-driven number. What I mean by that is the manufacturers of these devices choose the kilowatt rating in order to compete in a given market with other home wind devices. Just like the way we do with first three numbers in the price of a gallon of gas, we only tend to look at the rating itself with the wind device and don't really peer behind the curtain to find out what it was based on.
If we look at what specifically drives the kilowatt rating of any home wind turbine we find that it is highly dependent on the speed and sustained strength of the wind. That means that your 1 kW wind turbine will only produce that much energy in a, say, a 28 mph wind.
Of course the number differs depending on the wind turbine, but you get my drift. It is highly dependent on that wind speed and depending on the manufacturer's definition of honesty they may or may not state that and make it obvious for you in their sales literature.
So, you have to look at the details in order to make sense of this number. So what if the device will create 1 kW of power at 28 mph? If you only have 9 mph, then you are obviously going to make a lot less power.
In conclusion, you have to be careful with a home wind turbine to make sure you are buying what you think you are. The manufacturers of these products use this number as a marketing tool and you have to look through the details to make sure you are buying the right device to fit your particular situation at your house.
