With all the talk these days about going green and reducing one's carbon footprint, it is a great idea to consider windmills for home power in that discussion. With technology constantly improving and moving toward lower and lower cut-in speeds, more and more people located all around the country will be able to benefit from wind turbines on their property.

The following are the things you can do with your windmill power at your home:

Charge a bank of batteries for later use - this is probably the most popular thing people do with the electricity they manufacture with their home wind turbine. It doesn't require any special power conversion equipment to do that and if you have a large enough bank of batteries you can supply power for critical equipment in case of a power outage.

Supply power to a single device, like a pump - in farm applications this is a very popular way to go for windmills use for home power generation. Especially a device that is intermittently used. You can use a battery to store the power you make and release it when the device needs it.

Power your entire house - this takes a big turbine. Like 3-4 kilowatts and it can cost $50,000 to get something that big. A lot of local communities and neighborhoods may draw the line at a machine this big but if it is allowed, you can really slash your home expenses now and for a long time in the future.

Sell your excess to your local utility - you will need a net meter to pull this off, but it is done all the time now. You just export what you make over and above what you will use for yourself back to the power grid for use by others. You will definitely need a professional experienced in working with your utility in doing grid tie-ins involved.

The decision of what to do with the power you make is a crucial one. Of course there is a way to change it if you decide to do something else with the power later but it is good to really consider your options on the front end to make sure you have the proper interface with the power consuming device.

In conclusion, there are just so many things you can do to make use of windmills for home power. They are a great way to cut costs and reduce your carbon footprint.
