Southwest Wind Power makes wind turbines and is headquartered in Arizona. They manufacture windmills for home and use by commercial concerns.

Which markets does Southwest serve?

Primarily small commercial. Their turbines are not typically small enough to be used for homes.

Their primary product produces 3.7 kilowatts of electricity and is much larger than is needed by the average home. Most homes need about 1 kW.

What does the Southwest turbine cost?

They cost a pretty penny. While it is relatively easy to find windmills priced under $1,000, these will cost over $15,000 fully configured. In addition, you will need to mount this turbine on a tower and that will cost another $11,000.

Where does wind work best on a person's property?

This is the king daddy of all questions relative to wind turbines.

Careful placement of the wind turbine in just the right spot will ensure your success. Taking time on the front end to look at all the possible places you might install the turbine is not easy.

But the payoff is substantial. If you want ideal wind, the best place is up high. At least 30 feet above the highest obstacle - like trees and buildings - will give you the strongest and most consistent wind.

What's to like and what's not to like about Southwest Wind Power as a company?

You get very friendly service when you call them. They are very helpful but the follow up after that is weak.

They won't answer your questions directly and instead rely on a dealer network to get that done.

This company is growing very quickly and I completely understand their need to delegate. However, they should have a central customer service that can answer questions on the front end.

Making the customer go to the hassle of leaving a message with a dealer just to get a simple question answered is a pain.

The dealers are nice too, but the whole process is just sort of a hassle that you don't expect to find in this day and age of customer service being the differentiator in most industries.

You would like to think that a company charging you this much for a product would respect your time more than this.

Summarizing, Southwest Wind Power is a fine company and they produce a good product in their model 600. It is very efficient, but expensive. Be prepared for some slow going and customer service hassles in order to get products from them installed.
