Anytime you start a home project, like a wind turbines purchase, you need a strategy and a plan to operate from in order to get things done.
With anything new like buying a windmill would be for most people, you need to learn how it all works before you begin or else the process can be intimidating and get mired down. The result being, you never end up finishing the project.
There are 4 basic steps you need to take to get the right wind turbine bought, mounted, and producing power for you:
1. Understand why you are doing this in the first place - what are you trying to make power for and how much do you need to make? There are many end uses for the electricity you make with a home windmill. Common things to do with the power are charging batteries, supplying power for all or part of the house, and exporting electricity to the grid. Once you have decided what you want to do with the power, the answer to the second part of the question - what size turbine do you need - becomes clear.
2. Seek to map how the wind flows at strategic points around your property - it is of course critical to understand how the wind moves around your house, on average. In other words, if you have the greatest wind turbine on the planet and no wind to drive it, then you are going to be one disillusioned wind ornament owner. After you have first looked at overview maps and checked out Weather Underground.com for wind movement at a high level, then take the time to validate that by taking some data yourself. Using an anemometer, collect wind speed and direction data for a few weeks at various points where you might install a wind turbine. That will inform you where best to put your windmill or, it might suggest you need to drop this and move on to something else.
3. Decide what size and type wind generator you need and want to do the job - once you know what you are trying to accomplish and how much wind you have available, you can find the proper wind turbine for your situation.
4. Develop a plan of action for making it all happen - now that you have decided what class of turbine to buy you are in a position to develop a detailed plan of action for getting it done.
A wind turbines purchase strategy does not have to be complicated but if you leave out any of these steps it will be very difficult to have a successful experience. Be honest with yourself about how much of this work you can do yourself and what you cannot do yourself.
