Should You Get Wind Powered Generators Or Solar Power Devices?

Ah, the eternal question - should one buy wind turbine or solar devices for the home?

The good news is you don't have to make a choice. These technologies are compatible and now, more and more manufacturers are turning out hybrid models that incorporate both solar and wind in the same device.

Much of the time there is both wind and sun out that can drive these devices. However, much of the time you will only have one or the other. When the wind is blowing it usually means a front is passing through or weather is on the way. That usually means the sun won't be present.

Here are some facts on the strengths and weaknesses of both systems and why you need to consider both when you are looking to buy wind turbine and solar systems:

Wind turbines work best where the wind is at least 9 mph on average. They will certainly work with less wind but to make a lot of electricity you need a lot of wind. Solar systems likewise cannot make power unless the sun is out. To make a go of solar systems you need a lot of sunny days.

Solar systems are very passive and have no moving parts. So, that means they don't wear out very fast and their useful life is quite long. Wind systems are subject to a lot of stress from the moving and shifting wind. They usually have a useful life of 20 years or more, but in chaotic or turbulent conditions they can take a beating and not last nearly that long.

In both cases, there are only certain states where either technology is a complete no-brainer. For windmills that means a swath of states right down the middle of the country. For sun, that usually means out west.

As a final caveat, we must realize sooner than later that we really don't have a choice in this matter. As fossil fuel resources inevitably come to an end, we are left with no choice but to switch to something else to create our electricity.

The more people are incentivized to buy both windmills and solar devices the faster the prices will come down and the faster the technologies will improve. This is the real key because the cheaper the devices are, the more we can afford to put them in places that don't have optimal wind and sun.

In the final analysis, we really just can't afford to be picky about whether to buy wind turbine OR solar energy production systems. The impending energy crisis and drying up of fossil fuel resources will force us one day to employ both and then some.
