The altitude watch isn't for everybody. Many people would rather sit around and do nothing to get outside and do the wilderness. Either you are, or you are not at outdoor type person. The type of person that buys an altitude watch is an outdoorsman's outdoorsman.

These are serious timepieces and they don't come cheaply. They're very rugged but you pay a lot for that toughness. Altitude watches can be under $200 but run in the thousand dollars in some cases.

What features will the best altitude watch have?

Barometer - the barometer is really the functional part of this watch. It is really the brains behind the function. The barometer reads outside air pressure and translates that into another reading that estimates altitude. Therefore, it is very important to calibrate the barometer feature of your watch. This has to be done at regular intervals. You can't just calibrate one time and expected hold up for long time. If the weather changes significantly, or any time you get near an elevation of known height, is a good idea to reset, or calibrate the barometer function on your altitude watch.

Compass - although the compass is not the main reason you get an altitude watch, having one does go hand-in-hand with most any outdoor endeavor. You certainly will have a primary compass to tell you which direction you're going in, but having a backup function on your watch can also be extremely helpful and may even be a lifesaver. If your primary device fails for any reason it is great to know that you have a compass on your altimeter watch that you can use.

Thermometer - this can be very handy function if you're staying out overnight or up in the mountains. Again, the altitude watch is purchased for other reasons than knowing the temperature, but it is a very nice to have to know that you can sense temperature, barometric pressure, and altitude all on a device strapped to your arm.

There are certainly a number of other features that you can get with such a watch. But, most are very specific to the situation in which you find yourself in outdoors. What I mean by that is if you are going to be spending time at the beach or in a nautical setting, it is a good idea to seek out a watch with title chart information. If you are diving in the ocean then you can also get a depth finder function. You just have to know which altitude watch variation is going to fit best with your particular outdoor genre.
