We are all frustrated by the escalating price of energy at our homes and the lack of control that we have as individuals regarding the availability of electricity in the future. As far as renewable energy systems go, a good wind turbine buy strategy can be a great way to go to relieve some of the price pain, but they are not right for everyone.

The following are the reasons they may not be right for you:

You don't have enough wind blowing on your property - everyone has some wind though. The question however, is do you have enough wind available on your property to sustain a good wind turbine purchase project?

The way you go about doing the check is to get a small device called an anemometer and place it at several locations around your property for at least a couple weeks in each place. When you have collected the data you can download it to your computer and see if on average you have at least 9 mph.

If you do, then your project is quite straightforward - it's a no-brainer because you will start paying off your investment right off the bat. However if you don't have 9 mph you'll have to get a lot more creative and possibly use a wind device with a lower cut-in speed which will cost a lot more. It's still very doable but it just takes some more research to make sure you get the right device matched to your wind conditions.

Your local government won't allow you to install the wind device in the most advantageous spot - yes, your local government can conceivably throw a wrench in the whole renewable energy project at your house. At the very least they will require some sort of permit in order to move forward. This may or may not be a problem in your specific case.

You just need to take the time to do the research and learn what your local government requires. A lot of that will be driven by citizen action and the proclivity for or against renewable energy by the folks at live near you. All you have to do is ask your city government for their permitting department and find out what restrictions are, if any.

While a good wind turbine buy strategy can be a great way to curb rising energy costs, they also just aren't a panacea. They aren't right for everyone in every situation. You have to take some time upfront and research objectively to make sure before you move to buy one. Otherwise, you could be stuck with a very expensive roof ornament.
